SpiceJet has announced the commencement of its membership in the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global trade association for the airline industry. The announcement makes SpiceJet the first Indian Low-cost-carrier to join the global association. IATA has over 290 airlines from across the world as members.

This was confirmed by the IATA Director General & CEO, Mr. Alexandre de Juniac, in a letter welcoming SpiceJet warmly, as IATA’s newest member.

Conrad Clifford, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific, IATA welcomed the airline with the statement, “We are delighted to welcome SpiceJet as part of the 290 airlines in the IATA family. SpiceJet is the first Indian low cost carrier to be an IATA member, and our fifth member in India. We look forward to working with Ajay Singh and his team at SpiceJet in shaping the industry’s agenda in India and around the world, and in bringing value to SpiceJet through its IATA membership.”

A press release announcing the membership stated, "The IATA membership is also significant on account of SpiceJet’s plans for rapidly expanding its international footprint. IATA operates numerous global airline industry initiatives and programs in financial and distribution areas; and the membership also allows SpiceJet to explore and grow its collaborations with international member airlines of IATA through interlining and code shares, enabling SpiceJet to seamlessly expand the network options for its passengers in future."

SpiceJet achieved the membership after successfully completing the IATA’s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), the benchmark for global safety management in airlines and an essential requirement to gain IATA membership. The audit confirms the airline’s compliance with internationally-approved aviation safety standards across parameters in operational management and control systems.

Air Canada has announced a new updated schedule in response to the closure of airspace for the grounded Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The revised schedule covers 98 per cent of the routes previously operated by the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft through a series of mitigation measures, temporary route suspensions, and schedule changes.

The airline will be updating its June schedule as well, especially since the timeline for the return of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft is still unknown. The airline has removed Boeing 737 Max aircraft usafe from its schedule until at least July 1, 2019 to ensure that customers can plan and book their travel without worrying about schedule changes and cancellations.

To mitigate the impact of the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft, Air Canada will be operating similar-sized or larger aircraft on routes operated by the grounded 737 Max Aircraft. The airline has extended leases for aircraft schedule to exit the fleet to ensure there is no shortage of aircraft. The airline is also accelerating the in-take of recently acquired Airbus A321 aircraft from WOW Air into its fleet.

Air Canada is also working with alliance and codeshare partners to provide immediate extra capacity and alternative options to passengers. For example, its Montreal-Frankfurt flight for the month of May will be operated by Star Alliance partner Lufthansa.

Routes operated by smaller aircraft with higher frequencies have been replaced with larger aircraft that operate at fewer frequencies. The airline has changed the operating times for some routes as well. For example, beginning in May two daily flights between Toronto and Calgary have been consolidated onto one larger Airbus A330, leaving nine daily flights. Air Canada Rouge aircraft has been deputed to operate on domestic routes such as Toronto-Edmonton on selected frequencies.

Launch of some seasonal routes has also been delayed.

In a small number of cases, the airline has been forced to temporarily suspended service until May 31, due to non-availability of replacement aircraft. This includes flights from Halifax and St. John's to London Heathrow; the airline is re-accommodating customers over its Toronto and Montreal hubs.

Passengers whose flights have been affected can expect to receive an email detailing their updated itinerary. This information is also available in My Bookings on the Air Canada app or Air Canada website. Customers are advised, whether they have booked directly through Air Canada or not, to ensure their contact information is on their booking to facilitate communication of any flight changes.

The airline has also put in place a flexible rebooking policy with full fee waiver and a refund option for affected customers.

According to a press release issued by the airline on the revised schedule, “Customers originally scheduled to travel on a 737 MAX can call Air Canada at 1-833-354-5963 for information within 72 hours of their planned flight. Customers who have booked flights through a Travel Agent should contact them for immediate assistance.”

“Customers are further advised to check the status of their flight using the Flight Status function on the Air Canada app or on aircanada.com prior to going to the airport. Additional information, including specific changes to the April and May 737 MAX operation is provided at the special page, Update on flights operated by the Boeing 737 MAX, available on www.aircanada.com that will be updated as warranted,” the press release stated.

“Final decisions on returning the 737 MAX to service will be based on Air Canada's safety assessment following the lifting of government safety notices and approval by international regulatory authorities,” the press release continued.

Etihad Airways has announced a partnership with Panasonic Avionics to jointly develop and conduct trials of wellness solutions aimed at enhancing the traveller experience. As part of the partnership, Etihad will be the first airline to trial Panasonic’s new wellness solution, the Jet Lag Adviser, developed in collaboration with Detalytics.

The Jet Lag Adviser will be integrated into the airline’s passenger app.

A press release issued by Etihad Airways stated, “One of the biggest challenges air passengers face when travelling across multiple time zones is jet lag. To help passengers combat this, the Jet Lag Adviser takes a range of passenger inputs including chronotype, circadian rhythms, height, weight, the nature of travel, and travel information such as flight times, routes and zones and uses its artificial intelligence engine to produce personalised jet lag plans for passengers with tailored advisories to help them reduce jet lag.”

Passengers utilizing the app receive a combination of personalized and generic route-based jet lag scores that summarizes the severity of jet lag on that specific route and how it might impact their own travel. The app also sends a personalized jet lag plan that incorporates the pre-flight, flight and post-flight phases, and provides a schedule of recommendations and tips to reduce jet lag.

The recommendations are divided for specific times in each phase and include tips such as sleeping, exposure to light, exercise, hydration, and the type of food to consume. The app also sends reminders with recommended actions for each phase, which help passengers to feel more energetic on arrival at their destination.

Commenting on the partnership, Robin Kamark, Chief Commercial Officer at Etihad Aviation Group said, “Etihad is committed to providing choice and a superior experience to our guests, and we are continually looking at new ways to do just that. With the Jet Lag Advisor, we can now leverage artificial intelligence to improve the travel experience. This will be the first of many wellness initiatives we will explore together, and we are excited about our partnership with Panasonic and the possibilities that lie ahead.”

Panasonic is also exploring further innovative wellness technologies with Etihad as the carrier readies itself to move to the new ‘Midfield Terminal’ at Abu Dhabi International Airport, where new technology features are set to significantly enhance the passenger experience.
